Binding Clips!

Have you ever used clips?? They are my new favorite tool! I love them for a couple of reasons: I hate pinning, they are fast, easy to see, and even easier to use.  I will admit, I had them sitting around for awhile before I finally broke them out.  I first used them for holding the binding in place - amazing! Pinning so many layers in a thin area is tough! The clips are amazing!

Next thing I used them for on this project was keeping all of my squares in order after I had already laid out my design, but, before sewing.  So fast!  

In this picture, although it is difficult to see, I am showing how strong these clips are by holding up the entire row of squares connected by just one clip each.  Just don't go swinging it around - that doesn't work so well.  But my open area to lay out the quilt was on a different floor than where I was sewing, so this worked out great.

Also after I had laid out my design I also used them to mark the order of my rows with 1 clip, 2 clips, 3 clips, more.  This is the first time I had done that and it worked out really well.

I also mentioned easy to see.  I don't have to worry about sewing over them - too bright and big.  But the more important reason I like that they are so easy to see is I am learning to baby proof my house - my munchkin is on the move and likes to taste everything!  These clips are much easier to pick up and keep track of than pins.  Obviously pins have their place - but these clips are giving them a run for their money (at least in my house)!

And here is the final project!  This was my first string quilt and it was a lot of fun!  I used the tutorial from filminthefridge.com .  It is queen size.

Day #6: Rulers, Cutting Mat, and Rotary Blade

I guess I'm cheating on this one - there are 3 different things in this post that I am grateful for.  Have you ever tried to make a quilt without any of these?!  It is frustrating!  I actually didn't make a quilt without them but I did make a fabric book for my little one.  Let me just say it didn't turn out the straightest - but he's just going to try to eat it anyway, he is not picky.  I love all of the different sizes and kinds of rulers!  They all have their place.  Just remember to remove all pins from sight, every... last... one of them!  There are few things in life that are worse than a nicked rotary blade!!!

Day #5: Machingers - Quilting Gloves.  These are recent discovery of mine.  They have aided in my ability to quilt on my regular machine.  I have a lot more control of my fabric, I get less frustrated, and my quilting looks a lot better.

Day #4: Fabric.  Not much to say about this one.  But boy do I love my fabric.  I love to organize it, touch it, and display it.  I am in the middle of setting up my sewing room so this is some of my fabric in its new home.

Here are a Few of our Favorite Things!

Day #3:  My Gingher scissors... I smile just thinking about them.  From the very beginning of time I've known not to touch my mom's silver scissors.  The same thing goes at my house.  My husband and brother-in-law still find it comical to yell from the other room, "I'm going to use these silver scissors to cut this paper, okay?"  They think they are so funny.  But seriously, these scissors cut through fabric beautifully!  I love the sound they make as they cut too.  If you've never noticed, listen carefully next time you use yours!

These are a Few of our Favorite Things!

Over the next two weeks, we are going to post pictures of some of our favorite things in the sewing room!  Feel free to let us know yours as well!  Maybe it is something you have had forever or maybe it is something you just discovered.  We always love to see what you love!

Day #1:    Binding Clips

Have you ever used these? They are wonderful!  In fact, there is going to be a whole post dedicated just to these little clips after Christmas!  These are strong clips that are faster to use than pins (in my opinion), I haven't had a problem of them coming off.  I am excited to share in the later post other ways I use these binding clips! I also love that mine are bright red: it makes them easy to see so I can snatch them up before my little one does.
